I found out about cottonseed meal while researching the best fertilizers for rare Australian native plants in the Proteaceae family, including grevilleas and banksias. Most of the experts recommend cottonseed meal because it is low in phosphorous (which these plants are sensitive to) and acidic (Proteaceae like a lower soil pH). Other fertilizers that are sometimes mentioned for Proteaceae include alfalfa meal, fish emulsion, and kelp meal. But cottonseed meal is the best because it helps reduce the soil pH.This is also a good choice for other acid loving plants such as azaleas, rhododendrons, and camellias.Cottonseed meal is a slow release fertilizer so you don't have to worry about the exact amount to apply, it won't burn the plants.This has a texture similar to coffee grinds and it doesn't have any noticeable smell. Here is a picture of what the ground up seeds look like.Directions on package covered had to look up how to use on line. Bag was ripped and poorly taped back together. For the price, I thought a new package with readable instructions would arrive. Very disappointed. Will look else where to get this.This is the best cottonseed fertilizer available for camellias and azaleas because of its slightly higher nitrogen content.
