It is 1792, over ten years since Britain's defeat by the American colonies, and the bitter humiliation still sticks in the Admiralty's craw. Now brutal smugglers, many of them naval deserters, occupy the Channel, plying their trade between England and France. Richard Bolitho's mission: to take three speedy topsail cutters and fight the treacherous raiders off the coast of Kent.
I've read all 21 volumes of this series. This whole series is excellent, well written, nautically and and historically excellent. I think it is better than the Hornblower books (I read one that was recommended to me, and immediately found an error in one of the battle maneuvers). You will want to get a copy of "A Sea of Words" which is essentially an illustrated dictionary of all the nautical terms and other details about that period in history. The Bolitho books don't stop to explain what a "fid" is or that a "spotted dick" is a particular dish with raisins in it.
